These works are of expansive fictional landscapes and zoomed-in scenes of a world I have created. This world is partly drawn from memories of my homes Kashmir and Delhi, from dreams, and from pure imagination. My paintings consist of magical creatures that animate the surrounding rocks, trees and dark waters. I took to creating a fantasy world where magic existed to try to uncover certain mysteries through my paintings.
In And then they decided on three eggs, twelve chillies, and one fish (2021), for example, angels meet to discuss how many eggs need to be passed over your body for it to be lucky, how many chillies need to be burned to ward off the evil eye, and how many rare fish need to be spotted for good luck. In Kala Pani (2021), angels avoid snakes and dark water to safely lower eggs to the ground — a way to bring new life to the earth. But one of the angels is quite clumsy or new to the task, and so has accidentally dropped and cracked an egg. Lastly, Moon Circumcision (2021) depicts a ritual whereby the moon is circumcised by angels, as a sort of means for celestial purification.
