In High Thought Tune, PC (2020) multiple loose, fringe-like threads create shapes that arc, coil and extend across the picture, echoing and disrupting the thinly painted stains of orange, pink and red beneath. Embracing intuition, flux and error, this painting combines rapid gestural mark making with slow controlled thread-work to offer a visual encounter that evokes physical energy and movement. Rankin uses fragments of Paul Celan’s 1968 text of the same title, embroidering them onto the painting’s edges, thereby turning the flat surface into a more resolutely sculptural form.
‘ Threadsuns above the grayblack wastes. A tree- high thought grasps the light-tone: there are still songs to sing beyond mankind.’
- Paul Celan, ‘Threadsuns’ (1967) Paul Celan, from Fadensonnen, Suhrkamp Verlag, 1968
