Beginning as a small clay maquette, held and shaped in the artist’s hands, the...Surrounded by You is one of the largest bronze works Tracey Emin has made to date. Beginning as a small clay maquette, held and shaped in the artist’s hands, the final work retains a strong sense of the artist’s touch. The sculpture was first exhibited in Emin’s solo show, ‘Surrounded by You’, at Chateau La Coste, Aix-en-Provence, in 2017. While the work depicts a reclining female nude, Emin was also visibly inspired by local mountain ranges, in particular Mont Sainte-Victoire, famously painted by Cézanne. The monumental form fluctuates between body and landscape as we move around it.
