The beaded arch at the centre of Untitled (Pink and Blue) (2022), like a radiant portal amid horizontal bands of colour, is a shape that the artist often returns to,...The beaded arch at the centre of Untitled (Pink and Blue) (2022), like a radiant portal amid horizontal bands of colour, is a shape that the artist often returns to, a ‘malleable, ambiguous or specific’ symbol that serves simultaneously as references to Indigenous moccasin forms, central figures and doorways. Here the arched form sits over and against painted bands of graduated pinks and blues – colours referential to historic bead palettes, which might echo the North American landscape: its sunsets, earth and mountains. Within the arch, glass seed beads are lane-stitched, and bugle beads are loomed into strips, with rows of 24k gold beads flat-stitched in between colours.
