Dream and Refuge (2020) shows a woman asleep, wrapped in a printed cloth, and was created with the displaced and the homeless in mind. Rather than presenting the woman as an object of pity, however, Michael Armitage shows her as an individual with a rich interior world, represented by the imagery crowding the outside of the picture space.
This dreamscape includes falling figures and the star found on the prow of a sailing dhow that bestows good luck on those who travel, while in the print of her wrap we find the hornbill from a creation myth associated with motherhood, loss and creation.
Dream and Refuge (2020) was created at The Curwen Studio in London and is built up through seven separate coloured impressions.
All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the non-profit organisation Gasworks/ Triangle Network to benefit three charities in Kenya: Beyond Zero, Ghetto Classics and The Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI).
About the Charities
Beyond Zero Support is a foundation created in 2014 in response to the high maternal and child deaths, and mother to child HIV transmission. Committed to heighten advocacy and resourcing, the charity collaborates with public and private sectors to invest in public health delivery for local and marginalised communities through access to treatment, refurbishment and provision of medical supplies to health facilities, and integrating training of community health workers as an immediate COVID-19 pandemic response at community and household levels.
Gasworks/ Triangle Network is a non-profit contemporary visual art organisation working at the intersection between UK and international practices and debates. Gasworks is the hub of Triangle Network www.trianglenetwork.org, a global network of artists and visual arts organisations that support professional development and cultural exchange amongst artists, curators and other arts professionals throughout the world. Gasworks’ collaboration will allow the full proceeds of the fundraising edition to be channelled to the organisations in Kenya to fund their important work.
Ghetto Classics programme is a community-based programme that is part of the Art of Music Foundation, based in Korogocho, one of the biggest slums in Kenya. The programme uses music education to provide the local youth with the opportunity to improve their future and that of their community, by instilling in them life skills that come with the discipline of studying art music. The underprivileged families that live in Korogocho face many challenges and since the pandemic, these have multiplied as basic needs are harder to meet and protective gear is scarce.
The Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute is a not for profit visual art space that seeks to support the growth of contemporary art in East Africa. Through the Covid artists’ hardship fund, NCAI will be providing grants and financial support to artists and art practitioners in the region. It will also be working closely with Beyond Zero and Ghetto Classics in their health, food provision and cultural support initiatives at this incredibly difficult time.
